Caveat: I read the year as FY2025 because the page's year selectors default to 2025. The site loads other years via scripts I could not query, so I have no 20-year Knight-Newhouse series.

Where the money goes

Summary. The biggest cost lines for FBS public departments are facilities and debt ($2.82B), coaches ($2.48B), and non-coaching staff ($2.15B), per Knight-Newhouse FY2025 [S48]. Direct athlete payments are now layered on top. The facilities race has moved from locker rooms to revenue-generating premium seating. Over $7B in stadium projects are underway, led by Florida's $1.45B plan [S72]. That has pushed debt to records: Penn State $534.7M, Florida State $437M [S71]. The split between power and non-power schools keeps widening, in TV money, CFP shares, roster budgets, and reliance on subsidies.
